Remember the last visual revamp that Orkut received earlier this month and we told you that it resembles the design of Facebook…we were wrong. Orkut is becoming Facebook. Neither Google is selling it, nor Facebook is acquiring it. But, the next time you visit you Orkut profile you will see something that looks familiar — a Like button!
Orkut has also started rolling out the new profile design to its users. So, soon you will be using an Orkut that “looks and feels” like Facebook. The social network has also has a new Twitter account — @orkutindia. So, when do we get to see the Facebook Page? I am sure they will have a good numbre of fans.
Joke aside, Orkut’s version of the “Like” button looks different from that of Facebook’s, which it should, and also has a question mark behind it. It’s like, Orkut is asking you whether you “Like” your friend’s stories and you can answer with different smileys. The Facebook “Like” is simple yet sophisticated, you either like something or you don’t. But, Orkut is adding different emotions to their, “Like.”
Gustavo Moura of the Orkut User Experience Team wrote in a blogpost, “Just as we add different smileys in emails, scraps and chat, we recognize that you likely have different reactions to your friends’ stories.” If the function of this button is to add your reactions to your friends stories, why did they call it “Like”? Is it to give users a Facebookish feel while they are on Orkut? Or is it an attempt to try and better a feature of Facebook which is omnipresent across the web? Either way, I am not impressed.
Orkut tried to be cheesy with this new feature, but I doubt whether its going to help them in any way whatsoever.
What are your views of Orkut’s iteration of “Like”? Do you like it?
