mHealth: iPhones to Provide Mobile Means for Monitoring Blood Pressure

Mobile Marketing mHealth: iPhones to Provide Mobile Means for Monitoring Blood PressureIn what is proving to be yet another example of how closely intertwined the burgeoning mHealth industry is with Apple’s most popular mobile products, the FDA has now formally given the green light to a company named Withings (a French start-up that designs, develops, and industrializes connected devices), which has pioneered an iOS blood pressure monitor.
The product is now shipping in the US.
According to the description made available in FDA’s formal clearance, “The Withings Blood Pressure Monitor… is a noninvasive blood pressure measurement [system] intended to measure the systolic and diastolic blood pressures and pulse rate of an adult individual, over age 18, at home by using a non-invasive technique in which an inflatable cuff is wrapped around the upper arm.”
First touted earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, the mobile BP monitor ($129.99) pictured on the right requires three AAA batteries and is compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. A free corresponding iOS app captures and provides blood pressure results approximately thirty seconds after the test is initiated. The BP readings are logged as well as timestamped for record-keeping purposes. The readouts can be subsequently emailed to a physician.
According to the folks at Withings, the app can be synced to health monitoring services like Microsoft HealthVault and Google Health.
With more than 25% of the world’s population affected by hypertension, Withings has combined advanced technology and sophisticated design to create a medical device that is visually attractive, accurate and easy to use at home, in a professional setting or on the go.
Cédric Hutchings, Withings co-founder says, “Apple has revolutionized the smartphone and tablet market with both its design and functionality. We have strived to extend this revolution into the field of health and fitness by integrating our products to work seamlessly with Apple iOS devices.”

Juniper Research Projects Mobile IM Users will Grow But Not Threaten SMS Dominance

Mobile Marketing Juniper Research Projects Mobile IM Users will Grow But Not Threaten SMS DominanceBased on the latest research and projections by Juniper, mobile instant messaging users are on pace to surpass 1.3 billion worldwide by 2016, a figure that effectively triples the number of IM users in 2010.
Juniper speculates that the continued growth will be driven by the arrival of new services (Apple’s iMessage is cited as one example), and the accelerated adoption of existing services like AOL’s AIM, Blackberry Messenger, Microsoft’s Windows Live, Skype and Yahoo! Messenger.
The launch of these free Mobile IM services has been facilitated by the increasing number of smartphones in use, low-cost data packages and the development of high speed mobile networks. While some IM services are ad-funded, most are viewed by the operators as customer retention tools, with the only cost to the user being the data usage charged.
Juniper, however, sees no sign of Mobile IM services replacing SMS as a primary means of text communication on mobile handsets.
“SMS has one distinct advantage over ‘over-the-top’ services: its ubiquity,” writes Mobile Messaging Markets Report author Daniel Ashdown. “With an SMS I know I can reach almost any handset in the world, if I have its number. While IM services have some advantages, such as real-time communication and apparent absence of cost, the market is fragmented by different services which cannot communicate with each other.”
Juniper’s research also led to projections that premium-rate SMS and MMS will decline due to challenges from other forms of billing and delivery. MMS traffic and revenue, on the other hand, will continue to grow, but Application-to-Person (A2P) MMS will not have as big of an impact as A2P SMS. Lastly, Juniper finds that mobile email adoption will likely persist as the number of handsets with QWERTY keyboards, Internet access and larger screens increase.

Hot Mobile Rumor Says Radically Redesigned iPhone 5 To Be Released in August

Mobile Marketing Hot Mobile Rumor Says Radically Redesigned iPhone 5 To Be Released in AugustA new headline courtesy of the Boy Genius Report (BGR) has set the tech blogosphere ablaze today.
According to “reliable sources” speaking with BGR, Apple will release its 5th generation iPhone in August, not September as initially – and widely – reported.
But the most attention-worthy aspect of the report pertains to the design of the next generation handset. Until now, the lion-share of industry estimates have suggested that the new iPhone will be almost identical – at least in terms of its design – to the iPhone 4.
But BGR is confident that something “radical” lies ahead.
“While Apple has indeed been giving some developers access to a device known as the iPhone 4S — an iPhone 4 with upgraded internals — BGR has independently confirmed that the next-generation iPhone will not merely be an upgraded iPhone 4 as had been previously rumored,” the report asserts.
“We have been told by a reliable source to expect a radical new case design for the upcoming iPhone. We have not been given any additional details surrounding the design of the new iPhone case, though,” BGR concludes.
As you may have noticed by now, iPhone 5 rumors have been both plentiful and diverse this year. Three months ago, we heard that the device would have an internal antenna and aluminum body. Next we heard rumblings about the iPhone 5 sporting an edge-to-edge display and a n ultra slender teardrop-like design. Then, for the last eight weeks, we’ve heard that only small phsyical changes are on tap.
Could the BGR report be accurate or are we simply looking at yet another one of the rumor mill’s greatest contemporary hits?
Chances are we won’t know for sure until late summer when Apple finally lifts the curtain on the most eagerly anticipated smartphone release of 2011.

iCloud May Rival Twitter, Gmail User Base Size on Launch

Mobile Marketing iCloud May Rival Twitter, Gmail User Base Size on LaunchIn terms of the size of its user base, Apple’s iCloud may immediately rival the likes of Gmail and Twitter when it debuts this fall.
Based on the findings of a proprietary survey by analyst Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital Markets, 76% of iPhone owners will use Apple’s iCloud on launch.
Those figures were derived from a poll of 1,500 respondents in early June, following iCloud’s formal introduction at Apple’s WWDC.
If the poll’s prognostication proves accurate, the forthcoming iCloud service could debut with a built-in user base that tops 150 million people out of the gate.
“This high response rate affirms the growing interest in storing, syncing and sharing music, photos and documents across multiple devices [such as] smartphones, tablets, PCs and TVs,” wrote Abramsky in the report.
Of course, a major reason why iCloud is so attractive is because it’s free to use. Yet, iTunes Match – which comes at a price – appears powerfully attractive to Apple fans as well.
Notwithstanding that the music file matching service will cost $24.99 annually, the RBC survey shows that nearly one-third of respondents plan to pay the asking price and use the services. Consequently, RBC estimates that iTunes Match will generate upwards of an additional $1.5 billion in annual revenue for Apple.
In the big picture, however, Abramsky suspects that Apple’s new services will primarily strengthen the company’s already enormous fan base. “Because it stores user data, iCloud along with iTunes is expected to enhance loyalty and stickiness of Apple’s customers, helping defend against threats from Android, helping grow a defensible install base of users who continually upgrade to next generation Macs, iPhones, iPads and iPods,” Abramsky concluded

Police Raid ‘Excellent’ Private BitTorrent Tracker, Admins Arrested

Police in two countries have coordinated to close down a 30,000 torrent private BitTorrent tracker. The operation, which spanned Sweden and Germany, closed down XNT.nu, a site which had risen through the ashes of other sites shut down by authorities in 2009. Police have arrested two suspected administrators and seized the site’s server.
In the wake of first Pirate Bay trial in 2009, emboldened anti-piracy groups – “guilty” verdict in hand – started to apply pressure on torrent sites hosted in Sweden. Antipiratbyrån wrote to several sites with warnings for them to discontinue any and all copyright-infringing operations.
One such site was SweDVDR, which was considered one of the most coveted private trackers of 2008. Initially they announced they would close down, although along with another site, SoftMP3, they decided to release their source code to the public, enabling other sites to spring up in their place.
A pair of new sites – TVSource and DVDRSource – seized that opportunity but despite having code on a plate, failed to make it to the big time alone. Instead, the staff of the sites (which were actually owned by the same person) decided to pool their resources and merge their databases to create a new site – XNT.nu – known to its users simply as ‘eXcelleNT’.
eXcelleNT
By January 2010, eXcelleNT had more than 13,000 users but just 600 torrents. By early May 2011, the position was quite different. Although the userbase had remained steady, topping out at just under 17,000 members, torrent count had increased dramatically to between 28,000 and 30,000. But that would be the end of their good times.
Following an investigation conducted by anti-piracy group Antipiratbyrån, police in Borlänge, Sweden, moved Tuesday to arrest a suspected admin of XNT.nu.
Based on new information discovered in this raid, they proceeded to arrest a second man in the Stockholm area on Wednesday.
“We believe that the men have been administering and managing the site together,”said prosecutor Frederick Ingblad, a veteran of anti-filesharing operations.
While computers were seized at the houses of the suspects in Sweden, the site itself was hosted on a server in Germany. That too has now been seized.
Both men, who are in their 20′s, are said to have made some level of confession. They were then released pending further enquiries.
From being quite a safe haven for file-sharing, the heat in Sweden against both users and sites is certainly rising. However, a large number of sites – some of them of significant size – still operate from the country including the largest of them all.

The Pirate Bay: Five Years After The Raid

Today, exactly five years have passed since The Pirate Bay was raided by the Swedish police. At the time the entertainment industries hoped that this would silence the deviant BitTorrent site for good, but in hindsight we can conclude that they had actually awakened a monster. The raid and the ongoing battle that later unfolded reads like a script for an upcoming Hollywood blockbuster.
tpbJust a few days ago The Pirate Bay upgraded its moderation backend to make it compatible with IPv6 addresses. This move was to ensure that the site is future-proofed and is a clear sign that the site’s current operators have no intention of shutting it down.
To most current users the following may not be a surprise, but for those aware of the site’s history know that without a few essential keystrokes five years ago, The Pirate Bay may have not been here today.
May 31, 2006, less than three years after The Pirate Bay was founded, 65 Swedish police officers entered a datacenter in Stockholm. The officers were tasked with shutting down the largest threat to the entertainment industry at the time – The Pirate Bay’s servers.
While the policemen were carrying out their jobs, Pirate Bay founders Gottfrid and Fredrik learned that something was seriously wrong. In the months before the raid they were already being watched by private investigators day and night, but this time something was about to happen to their trackers.
Fredrik recalls the day vividly: “I got a phone call like 10am in the morning, it was Anakata [Gottfrid].” He told Fredrik that there were police officers at their office, and asked him to get down to the co-location facility and get rid of the ‘incriminating evidence’, although none of it, whatever it was, was related to The Pirate Bay.
As Fredrik was leaving, he suddenly realized that the problems might be linked to their tracker, so he initiated a full backup of the site. At the co-location facility there were dozens of policemen, some in civilian clothing. Fredrik asked them: “Who are you? What are you doing here?” To which they responded: “Who are YOU? What are you doing here?” After questions back and forth, Fredrik eventually told them his name, and a police officer said, “Oh, we’ve been looking for you.”
Footage from The Pirate Bay raid
Although these events may seem almost comedic, Fredrik’s decision to start a backup of the site is probably the most pivotal moment in the site’s history. Because of this backup Fredrik and the rest of the Pirate Bay team were able to resurrect the site within three days. If there hadn’t been a recent backup, things may have turned out quite differently.
Technicalities aside, the determination to get the site back online as soon as possible set the defiant tone for the years that followed. Backups were spread over different countries to guarantee that the site would survive any attack, and although the site has gone down for 24 hours or more since the raid, this was usually caused by technical problems combined with laziness or wild parties. If they were shut down because of legal troubles, it usually took just a few hours to set up shop elsewhere.
Now back to 2006, when the Swedish police confiscated 180 servers, most of which had nothing to do with The Pirate Bay. After all the equipment was taken, Peter, Fredrik and Gottfrid were escorted to the police station. During the subsequent questioning, the Pirate Bay trio gave up very little information. Gottfrid quickly confessed to his crime – of killing the Swedish prime minister when he was 2 years old – but that was all they got.
After the raid it became clear that the US had threatened to put Sweden on the WTO’s black list if they refused to deal with the Pirate Bay problem. Even the MPAA was involved, with John Malcolm, Executive Vice President of the MPAA, writing a letter to Sweden’s State Secretary in which he stated: “It is certainly not in Sweden’s best interests to earn a reputation among other nations and trading partners as a place where utter lawlessness with respect to intellectual property rights is tolerated.”
The raid eventually resulted in a lengthy investigation out of which the police generated 4000 pages of evidence against the people involved. The evidence was used by the prosecution during the Pirate Bay trial of 2009 and the appeal of 2010 where four people who were previously involved with the site were sentenced to jail time and significant fines.
The case is currently waiting to be appealed once again, this time at the Supreme Court. The site, meanwhile, is still up and running and it is larger than ever before. Right before the raid the site welcomed its one millionth registered user, today they have well over 5 million. It wouldn’t be far fetched to say that all the legal struggles have actually increased the site’s user base, instead of shutting it down altogether.
In 2008 The Pirate Bay team declared May 31st to be celebrated as a very special occasion for pirates.
“Let today be the pirates independence day!” they announced at the time. “Today we celebrate the victories we’ve had and the victories that will come. Today we celebrate that we’re united in our efforts. Keep on seeding!”
And in 2011 they continue to make a case for file-sharing and for an open Internet. A few weeks ago they commented on the recent Internet censorship proposals in Europe and elsewhere, urging the public to defend their rights. It’s no longer a battle to keep The Pirate Bay online, they claim, but one in defense of the Internet.
Nevertheless, with a failed raid and several legal decisions against it, the site has grown to become the number one censorship target for a rapidly developing list of countries around the world. Draconian attempts to silence the site are looming on an ever-nearing horizon.
“The battle of Internets is about to begin,” The Pirate Bay team said.

New Changes Facebook Image Theater Viewer Pop Up Window

Today I will be telling you about a new amendment which was observed on Facebook recently, it is related to the image viewer which was improvised recently. We all know that when this new improvisation was done related to the image viewer most of the users never liked this, just because of the black colored background on the image viewer. In this post I will tell you about the new changes which has been visualized recently on Facebook.
image
You can see the snapshot of this new image viewer, most of the users never wanted that new image viewer as that black background was very depressing as Facebook just wanted the users to see any image on Facebook without navigating form the page, the attempt was successful but then the design or I should the User-Interface was not attractive enough to satisfy the users. So, finally Facebook decided to change something in this new interface by removing that black background and replacing it with the whitish one.
I hope that this will be liked by the users, as now they will not roll back to the classic image viewer because they do not want the users to navigate from the current page. Till now this feature has not been rolled for all the users, it was just tested so some of the users managed to get this snapshot from their account. Let us see what will be their next step at least I will be fine if they go on with this new idea of white image viewer. So, you can just wait to watch the next change in your account. I hope it will be positive for you. I hope that this information will be useful to you, so please share it with your friends and please let us know about any question regarding this news. We will try our best to update it with the latest news feeds.
